| Invincible - PG-13 | A little known film about a little know Polish strongman in pre WW2 Germany. Any film that focuses on the story of a strong man is bound to have rather flat dialogue since those with big arms and good acting aren't easy to find. While the other lead role by Tim Roth does come off as a very sinister Nazi occultist the rest of the unconvicing cast just plainly fail to catch to essence of Nazi. Not as scarey nor German enough to be close to the real thing. With random dream squences just as confusing as the Nazi trickery the plot drags out longer than it should. While an interesting story idea with an unpredictable ending, I've seen performances of the same kind done so much better. | July 1, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Casshern - Unrated | Being one of thefirst few films to be almost entirely shot via greensceen, like Sin City and Sky Captain, the Japanese science fiction action epic is not as epic as some will try and advertise. Unlike my examples given, the characters appear to have no real originality or depth to them, instead just rehashed lines and attitude anyone can notice from an anime trailer alone (one example: the government has a symbol with is just a 3 pointed swostica, in a way rather cliche). However like those films mentioned, it is a great visual spectacle. Such effects included lare futuristic cities, armies of robots and of course fight scenes that bend the laws of physics (not supprising for the Japanese) that goes with bright colours and lights but instead goes for a more gritty post apocolyptic feels of which it does succeed as for a backdrop. Overall what sounds like a great idea on paperjust lost inself in a director that went to far. I mean I've watched foreign films just as long with hardly any action that I (and others if you check) would hail as classics, so it has nothing to do with subtitles, its just not great as it could of been considering all the other films of its kind I've already seen. It's more like an anime trying to scrap it's camp uni-sex style for something mainstream, but you can still see it at times. | June 26, 2007 | N/A | |||
| The Magdalene Sisters - R | Despite the very lighthearted "chick flick" persona that the cover gives, the film is actually very sadistic. It's simply about teenage girls in the 1960s who have fallen pregnent out of wedlock and thus condemned to a Catholic Asylum in Ireland... and as you might of already guess from some of the words I've used the Asylum is horrific. All the nuns (notably the head) gives excellent portrayals of brutal corruption and mental/physical torture brought about when you combine authority with weakness. This film isn't out to bash Catholics, but just the characters since the girls are traditional women of faith. A rather unimaginative ending and the all female cast (I'm not being sexist) gets dull to an extent but in some way due to the time period it makes all of the events even more stomach turning. | June 23, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Seven (Se7en) - R | Fincher's genre hybrid of crime and horror is a perfect mergence of the two into a plot containing a twisted game of cat and mouse. Even with the graphic brutality the film leads on, such of which is more shocking than most films of it's kind, it is linked in with meaningful dialogue and a build up of heart pounding tension and twists til the very end, of which doesn't fail to deliever nor unnecessaryly drags out. | June 12, 2007 | N/A | |||
| The Last King of Scotland - R |
With the greater amount of biopics produced, many I find are interesting for character development but as themselves I still look at them as an actor. However the reason for this is because we are fed sympathy... however The Last King of Scotland delievers a story about the must unsympathetic character... an African dictator. While the main drive seems to follow the ups and downs of James McAvoy of whom I felt was somewhat lacking in changing is style, Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin steals the show with a multiple sides of acting. At first we see a simple man of the army, then a very likeable man, someone who'd you like as a friend but then quickly turns into someone so scarey enough to make you wet yourself everytime he talks and/or looks you in the eye... pretty obvious why he won the Oscar. As for the rest you see many changes in class from rich to poor sides of Uganda and through this we get a descent look through the keyhole into real life Africa and how much it makes you sick. And guess what, it wasn't a Hollywood film either! |

| Thank You For Smoking - R |
The astrange cast of corperate "wild cats" without straight up morals jump into this well paced sarcastic comdey jab at... well everyone, those for and against cigarettes... alcohol, guns, entitainers, pussy liberals, the whole package. It depends on whose side you want to take, a statement often used throughout. While the ending is a tad unoriginal if not predictable by 2/3 in, the run up is filled with a "freeze camera then joke on top" style, unside-down social messages, a well placed story narration and arguemts to counter-counter arguments... what ever that means. You might even call it a film out to give "end of a South Park episode" esc teaching. A comdey film with a neutral standpoint. And don't worry, Adam Brody is only in it for 5 minutes, don't know why hes listed as main cast... |

| The Lost World - Unrated | Considering this is the first full silent film I have ever watch, I was still somewhat swayed by the classic charm, simular to that from King Kong, however due to the silence and the never ending stream of music with the odd written text on screen for dialogue, it's charm was limited to the fact of it being a silent film. This means that it was still a wonderful piece of original cinema but without the sound, the monsters weren't as memerable as Kong or others, but being said, they were THE FIRST. | May 21, 2007 | N/A | |||
| The Wicker Man - R | An original British horror film, of which uses it's own unique form of unconventional scare tactics. While there are absolutly NO usually jumps, shocks, dark settings, eerie music of even monsters/killers... what makes this film weird is the fact everyone is so normal, yet just out of reality. Edward Woodward leads in a sort of anti-hero role, his overlly conservative Chritian attitude makes one question "who's side our we supposed to be on" even though the finalle is rather bittersweet ending. | May 20, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Hostel - R | Tarantino lied to me... in what was portrayed as the next hell on earth for violent media was a quick 20 minute in total conventional slasher of which has an hour of poor quality acting. Through out you'll be saying "why hasn't anyone died" and even worse "this film is predujice against Eastern Europe". Whether or not gore was enough it still doesn't help the previous bore. While it does get sick (literally), ifnot even amusing at times as you see a constant volly of death towards the end, it's not as smart as other films of its kind like Saw. If I saw this in theaters I would want my money back otherwise I'd make the film look like child's play for the ticket seller... not to mention Eli Roth. | May 19, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Frankenstein - Unrated | Back to the basics. | May 13, 2007 | N/A | |||
| The Hills Have Eyes - R | What portrays itself as a horror film comes off more like a snuff film... and not a graphic one. The main problem was that they explained what the "monsters" were within the first 20 minutes so after that the sense of tension and stalking by the unknown is completly gone and so just leaves the next hour with nothing particularly special, nor even as violent as it thinks it is. | May 10, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Tremors - R | A extremly nonsensical comedy homage to 50s "creature features". And because of that don't expect to be supprised in terms of plot. Like other movies of it's structure you will quickly find a notable character a hope he isn't the one to get eatten by, dare I say it... a not so implausible monster. While most of the jokes are related to the whole white trash culture, there is plenty of slapstick alongside that makes it a prime example of tradtional tongue in cheek comedy. | May 8, 2007 | N/A | |||
| Fight Club - R | Well, if you think this film sounds basic then you'll be in for a supprise, looking at both underground and criminal culture thats both amusing and overlly crude in its rather surreal sense of style. Even Brad Pitt comes off as "non pop culture". | May 7, 2007 | N/A | |||
