1
King Kong (1933,  Unrated)
King Kong
One of the true standing works of filmic art that was both innovative and unique for its time paving the way for further development in the industry. It is full of classical charm and wonderful effect techniques that help bring the films soul more out into the open. One can hopefully look back to the time it was made and if you can (quite easily) then this should be an excellent watch for those of all ages and is a must see for any movie enthusiast!
2
Downfall (Der Untergang) (2004,  R)
Downfall (Der Untergang)
As a lengthy historical drama, Downfall holds ground and looks deeper into the dark side of history. The diologue is original, keeping in line with proper dutch vocals and style and its questionable moral values of each character. Plus even if you know your history, you'll still enjoy the slow tense build up dispite the knowledge of how it ends (this works both as a film itself also) not to mention willpower that can be brought into modern day into understanding further the old question of the Nazis...why?
3
Apocalypse Now (1979,  R)
Apocalypse Now
(While not going into an excesive review *cough*) A more dark, twisted YET realistic portrayal of the Vietnam War that successfully highlights the mental impact of such warfare and how it can take it toll on anyone, with an ending that can best be described as "anti-hero". The cast gives their best and keeps a great sureal atmosphere through out.
4
A Clockwork Orange (1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange
Stanley Kubrick's immoral spin on societies troublsome youth with dark overtones and pitch black comic style in both performance and moral message. Its backwards and surreal take on social problems can both entertain but disturb the audience, raising further questions of it all.
5
Fight Club (1999,  R)
Fight Club
Well, if you think this film sounds basic then you'll be in for a supprise, looking at both underground and criminal culture thats both amusing and overlly crude in its rather surreal sense of style. Even Brad Pitt comes off as "non pop culture".
6
The Godfather (1972,  R)
The Godfather
A rather hard to describe masterpiece. Its lengthy and engaging story appears to captivate the whole concept and crude style of old fashion organised crime with memerable scenes and light heartedness.
7
American History X (1998,  R)
American History X
The shear morality of this film can quickly be judged as controversal however its moral message at the same time raises questions then answers then... however raising further questions on racial conflict and disruptful polictics in America that is still a real problem, with excellent realistic performances from the wide cast. There are scenes that are both for shock value and almost guilty entertainment which fans of this genre must see.
8
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975,  PG)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Basically, close to being the best comedy film of all time, its one of those very few films that can make you laugh when just thinking of the film in general. It combines a series of cliches, obvious historical plot holes and openly crude style of humour which is both ironic, sarcastic and deeply black in its style with jokes that still hold great light in modern media, for their ability, to be repeated but still be remembered positively.
9
The Shawshank Redemption (1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
Another rare book to film that I can call worthy of its success. Not only does this thoughtful slow paced drama create a lengthing interesting story but paves the way for some of the best memerable performances in film.
10
Pulp Fiction (1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
A great mixture of black humour and bloody fun, along with unforgetable scenes and dialogue from a full star cast.
11
Reservoir Dogs (1992,  R)
Reservoir Dogs
You'd think a simple story of heist gone wrong would be unoriginal and predictable? Well in this case however Tarantino once again pulls off a black comedy of both lighthearted action and more in depth character development with realisitc outcomes.
12
Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003,  R)
Cidade de Deus, (City of God)
Life in the world underbelly of crime, drugs and corruption that is portrayed with a powerful sense of verisimilitude and social position but to a modern standing.
13
Full Metal Jacket (1987,  R)
Full Metal Jacket
Solid yet sinister and crude yet comical. The cast all pull off supurb performances and unforgetful diologue in what can be described as a more plausible approch to the inside military and those recruted in the act of grizzly war. However, like Kubrick, he successfully makes this sad story a laugh out loud for the audience.
14
Hotel Rwanda (2004,  PG-13)
Hotel Rwanda
Thinking back to 2004 films, when the 2005 Academy Awards came around, I hadn't heard of this film, thats a downfall for me. I've seen all the other films that year and they were great, however when this premired on TV, the plentiful award winners tasted like sour bile after I saw this film. Not only does it push the portrayal of human morality to its limits with its captivating look at REAL LIFE events (such events which even make you further question society's means) and powerful performances from little known actors and a mostly black cast, which is a delight in these ages, but the film is so "un pop culture". I mean, even the fire fights show thought provoking images, the scenes of the Tuti genocide are very much depressing. It looks at corruption in todays governments, the world's lack of understanding of true suffering and even sub messages that I personally found to question religion and deeds together. Sad but informative, yet little will be done by the first world... and thats what this movie captures.
15
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
As a fantasy epic, the Fellowship brings in all the needs plus much more including grand battle, stunning CGI and powerful performances.
16
Schindler's List (1993,  R)
Schindler's List
The long road in which the begining of the most gruesum events in history unfold. With its old frame style yet modern acting techniques, Spielberg hands us a well performed message from history.
17
Taxi Driver (1976,  R)
Taxi Driver
De Niro pulls of another mermorable performance but this time as a simple taxi driver who in real life we'd all forget. The film is a slow build to a satisfing climax, along the way looking at the grim realities of such is the way of street life; vandalism, corruption, prostitution and total neglect of substainability. A real socially engaging film but of course good old sleezy yet enjoyable crimal acting... not to mention the well fitting relaxing soundtrack.
18
Sin City (2005,  R)
Sin City
More of a film into a comic than a comic into a film. Both stylish and brutal with a colourfully unique cast of characters and devided subplots loosly linked.
19
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Of course its retro theme is pretty cheesey and acting can be flat, however the explosive action scenes and the graphic portrayal of possible nuclear war, helps this film work well as a science fiction thriller.
20
GoodFellas (1990,  R)
GoodFellas
At times it may feel like a long ride but that ride is still full of original black humour, clear cut themes and memerable perfances, mafia style.
21
The Green Mile (1999,  R)
The Green Mile
Thrilling, comical, engaging, and complex. This film is both dark and beautiful in its approch to religious, racial and social understanding with a paranormal twist. The entire cast (even the subs) hold light in this execellent noval adaptation.
22
20 Million Miles to Earth (1957,  PG)
20 Million Miles to Earth
Awww come on? How could you not like it on some level? It has so many. It's no masterpiece or key stone in special effects film but by Jehovah it's a classic cheesy fun flick. If you've ever seen modern backdrop monster movies then notice that this embodies all the conventions despite being the 20th film of it's genre. You've got the unoriginal male hero who despite his neglected background excesses in all there is to know about finding and fighting monster... for no given reason. There's also the female nurse esc character who OF BLOODLY COURSE screams in the heroes arms in almost every scene and yep, it's got all the predictable character: our ignorant boss figure, overlly retarded press, unhelpful public who just get in the way, the farmer whos looking for his lost dog but finds the monster and the good old clumsy military who can't aim and fire for shit... and the monster? Well I'm not sure what it is but does it matter? It came from Venus, "the planet Venus?", YES THE F**KING PLANET! So it doesn't have to make sense. Also notice that the monster only attacks when pissed off so in theory, if all the predictable above didn't do anything, it would of lived by humans in peace... sad...

In conclusion, this is the defination of retro monster movies, got to love the animation and of course the cliche unoriginal plotline. One of the very few films worth seeing despite it's poor quality.
23
Jaws (1975,  PG)
24
Airplane! (1980,  PG)
Airplane!
Very rich is both classic slapstick, shock value and just plain humour, both light and heavy hearted which never had to stick to reality or intelligence to be appealing to many. In the spirit of the internet: "LOL!"
25
The Godfather, Part II (1974,  R)
26
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006,  R)
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Supprisingly amusing and incredably politically correct. Sacha Baron Cohen gives his Golden Glode winning performance as the crude, ignorant and down right norrow minded Borat as he meets REAL LIFE people who aren't to different, which can make this film scary at times. While there are plently of slapstick and racist jokes (that are also very much comical) it does include a number a points concerning the US we all forgot in a tide of cliche Hollywood productions. However the best characteristic of this insane mocunmentary is the embrassment one feels for the Borat as he openly puts himself in the line of US fire! "Sexy time!"
27
The Straight Story (1999,  G)
The Straight Story
This is a film WITHOUT major dialogue, fast paced action, hidden/symbolic meanings, anagonists or Hollywood Actors, and thats why I liked it... its about an old man who drives a lawnmoewer across the US to visit his brother, no more no less and for that its a pleasent slice of real life away from our complex city lives.
28
Memento (2000,  R)
29
Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru) (2001,  Unrated)
Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru)
Despite being very much your typical ultra violence of the east, it's alot more tasteful considering the whole atmosphere and social standing given at the same time.
30
The Lost World (1925,  Unrated)
The Lost World
Considering this is the first full silent film I have ever watch, I was still somewhat swayed by the classic charm, simular to that from King Kong, however due to the silence and the never ending stream of music with the odd written text on screen for dialogue, it's charm was limited to the fact of it being a silent film. This means that it was still a wonderful piece of original cinema but without the sound, the monsters weren't as memerable as Kong or others, but being said, they were THE FIRST.
