Van Wilder wasn't quite convincing. The relationships between the characters weren't at least. Roof escapes: brilliant! Pick axe deaths I can get used to though, Descent... Bloody Valentine...

    "Katch 'em, kill 'em"

On December 18, 1975, George and Kathy Lutz along with their children moved into a house in the legendary Amityville, New York. It would have been their dream home...if their dreams were nightmares. Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George co-star in this ...( read more)update of the classic horror movie.

    Review
This film is simply another nail in the coffin for the hopes of horror fans such as myself that an American cast and crew will deliver a genuinely frightful offering for our senses. 'The Amityville Horror' belongs to a growing collection of recent horror films from the USA which are seemingly designed only to make test audiences jump in the seats every so often. Only this can explain the barrage of loud noises and flashing images we seem to experience whenever a scary scene emerges from the otherwise mediocre dialogue and cinematography.

What happened to the skillful build-up of tension created by effective use of location seen in films like 'Don't Look Now'? Or the feelings of unease experienced during 'Rosemary's Baby'? Special effects is the villain from this reviewer's perspective. Time and time again, 'The Amityville Horror' presents us with shocking images of the evil in the house. However, with no tension, fear, or suspense in place, all these images can be appreciated for is the technical expertise which went into making them.

I only hope that audiences will begin to punish the Hollywood horror factory for this stream of limp attempts.

I can't believe I initially liked this movie. Make no mistake, Amityville '05 is an absolutely abysmal remake. Slaughtering the original, it effectively removes every detail that made the '79 film effective, and offers nothing new in return. Most of the weak scares don't even ...( read more)make sense. Awful!

An extremely well done remake that captures the visual style of the original. It was a giant surprise to see that Ryan Reynolds actually has a range of acting ability. The story was done just as much justice this time around and the characters were even more believable.

    Scared the hell outta me!!
  • November 13, 2009
This one was really creepy but even though Ryan Reynolds was psycho... yup, still hot. And shirtless.
  • November 12, 2009
    Doesn't look too bad!

Movie was ok, edge of your seat kinda stuff. Ryan Reynolds played his character well, the ending was very predictable.

Kurt Loder, MTV

The movie's only aspiration is to be a jacked-up re-jiggering of a name-brand horror 'classic.' It sets out to be not just schlock, but pre-chewed schlock. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The problem with The Amityville Horror is that, in a very real sense, there's nothing there. full review

April 15, 2005
Nick Schager, Slant Magazine

A smorgasbord of strobe lights, screeching soundtrack noises, and silly specters. full review

April 15, 2005
Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

I wasn't shocked by The Amityville Horror, or outraged by it: I felt nothing but disdain. full review

April 15, 2005
Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

In theory, this should all be scary, but it just isn't. You giggle at the B-movie cheesiness of it. full review

April 15, 2005
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

This house springs so many FX shocks it plays like a theme-park ride. Result? It's not scary, just busy. full review

April 14, 2005
Claudia Puig, USA Today

In this Amityville, the performances are bad, the special effects ho-hum, and it's not even particularly scary. full review

April 14, 2005
Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

If they scare up enough business to perpetuate this sort of retread, that will be the real horror. full review

I bought this expecting to be utterly terrified to the core, and while i wasnt as scared as i thought i would be, im suprised i can still sleep at night. I dont usually like true stories but ghost ones catch my interest, and the fact that this really happened (apparantly, we dont really know but i believe in ghosts) added to the aura of the movie. It is quite creepy and will have you watching your own four walls very suspiciously.
