Billie Whitelaw, Donald Sutherland, Ewa Aulin

Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland play two sets of identical twins who are mismatched at birth shortly before the French Revolution. One pair is reared as royalty; the other is raised as the children ...( read more  read more... )of peasants. The plot in this film by Bud Yorkin is a wonderful mishmash of Dumas, Victor Hugo, and Molière, with the peasant brothers joining the revolutionaries while their bizarrely foppish siblings eat cake and ignore the events around them. Wilder and Sutherland are joined by a who's who of British comedy stars, including Billie Whitelaw, Hugh Griffith, and Victor Spinetti (and a cameo by Orson Welles)--yet this film flopped upon release, only to become a cult item among college students of the period. --Marshall Fine

Gene Wilder is a Genius! Not a great movie but the scenes where Wilder is acting like a crazy asshole make this film entertaing.Sutherland is good, but he is just a sidekick to Wilder.

There is, unfortunately, not a lot in this comedy that's funny. Gene Wilder is a hilarious actor and can make most things funny just by saying them, but Donald Sutherland never seemed to quite catch up. Most of the gags went on far too long and weren't that funny to begin with, a...( read more)nd all the possible humor that could be taken from the setup didn't even really come into play until the end. They were too busy making sexual jokes about the queen to really make any of the humor stick. Too bad... I was hoping I would enjoy this much more.

I don't remember how successful this was when it was released, but among many movie lovers it was the funniest movie to come out in years! A turn on the mistaken identity plot. It's wonderful how everyone can keep a straight face among the supporting roles. Sutherland and Wilder ...( read more)are just...ridiculously funny. The 1/2 star off is for the VERY end. Not up to the quality of the rest of the picture.
