Classic John Waters. It?s very funny and probably did do a good job educating people about integration. Ricki Lake is really good and Divine is still, very sadly missed (the dirty bugger that he was)!

An amazing John Waters masterpiece that combines his own style (working with his weird, "unique" friends and being edgy but hilarious) with Hollywood mainstream filmmaking. The perfect combination that proved the world that the genius behind "Pink Flamingos" wasn't just some weir...( read more)d guy with a camera but a really mature, professional, extraordinary FILMMAKER. The man is not a weirdo! He KNOWS how to do his job! The performances, the dancing and the incredible screenplay are worth the entire movie. Divine shines proving us that she is ALSO a professional in her work: she IS an actress. A good one, btw, getting into the hard task to play both a nice mom and a racist S.O.B. that directs a channel. And she shines in both roles as no one does! Ricki Lake has such a beautiful light glowing from inside her it's just impossible not to love her and Michael St Gerard is the perfect hot lead-male. The movie is just flawless from start to finish but lacks of a strong hook to catch people who aren't familiar with the director or the cast but thanks to Divine's, Ricki's, Sonny Bono's and Debbie Harry's fans, it's probable it will leave forever, no matter how many adaptations to any genre come after this. And, in words of John Waters himself: "I hope 'Pink Flamingos' is turned into an Opera..."

ohn Waters reveals a somewhat more sentimental side with "Hairspray", a movie several people have told me they absolutely hated. I wondered what it was about Waters' style as a filmmaker that could provoke such anger? I think it's his affection for '60's movie-clichés transposed ...( read more)through askewed nostalgia and Waters' own gross-out sensibilities (his personal brand of humor, which can be quite wicked). I didn't much care for the film the first time I saw it, but I gave it a second chance and it grew on me. The reckless amateurishness is off-putting at first, but you have to meet "Hairspray" halfway. There is much to enjoy here, not the least of which is Divine as Ricki Lake's mom (and also as a bigoted network bigwig); wheeling and dealing after her daughter finds TV fame, Divine becomes a coiffed society queen, twisting away in front of the television and tossing off jaded quips like, "It's the times...they're a-changin'." The performances are all happily hammy, colorful and amusing, and the lightweight story comfortably shoehorns-in relevant political issues to counterbalance the slapstick. Ricki Lake is very appealing in her debut; also hilarious, Pia Zadora as a beatnik and Debbie Harry as the mother of Lake's main rival ("1-2-cha-cha-CHA, 1-2-cha-cha-CHA!"). It's not a seamless, polished picture, but it does have heart and charm and this sold me--but on the second time around.

I have to give this movie 3 1/2 stars (what is this Star Search?) because I think I've watched this movie 100 times. It's a lot of fun & reminds me of my childhood (in the 80s).

Not like most John Waters, but still great fun. (Much like 'Cry Baby' actually). Made in the 80's, set in the 60's and remade in the 00's. (This decade sucks). The music, dancing and overall feel is great fun! Ricki Lake is almost unrecognisable, but good and the overall message ...( read more)is typically controversial and strikingly confronting. A bit of an oddball, but still original and thoroughly amusing.

Nick Schager, Lessons of Darkness

The defining moment in the auteur's career-long dedication to lionizing Baltimore's misfit population. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The movie is a bubble-headed series of teenage crises and crushes, alternating with historically accurate choreography of such forgotten dances as the Madison and the Roach. full review

I watched this movie all the time, when I was like 12 or 13. It came on like every Saturday, and Grease would come on right after it. I loved it and I still do. I am not a big fan of remakes and I’m pretty sure the remake of this classic is something little girls with a crush on that high school musical guy, would only appreciate. So, if you haven't seen this movie, you are missing out. It was fun, funny, and quite entertaining. Rikki Lake did a great job in this movie.
