"Brief Encounter" is based on "Still Life", a one-act play play by Noel Coward, and it was the first major success from David Lean, who would go on to direct such epics as "The Bridge on the River Kwai" and "Lawrence of Arabia". It's premise is not entirely foreign today, nor mus...( read more)t it have been at the time, as forbidden love affairs are a staple of storytelling all across the world. But it's the wonderfully executed black-and-white cinematography, beautiful locations, and unforgettable performance by the two leads (Celia Johnson in particular) that make "Brief Encounter" the success it is.

Alec Harvey (Trevor Howard) and Laura Jesson (Celia Johnson) are both happily married with children. Every Thursday, they go to town for familiar and mundane business. One day, at a train station, Laura gets a bit of dirt in her eye. Alec, a doctor, notices her struggles and helps her remove it. The two exchange well wishes and farewells, but when they meet once again not long thereafter, a casual friendship starts.

Wonderfully illustrating the transformation of friendship into love is the motion pictures playing at the cinema. When Alec and Laura see a trailer for a film called "Flames of Passion", they react with excitement. However, when they accompany each other to the film, it's quite a bore compared to the passion between themselves. The couple, besides going to the theater, embarks on a number of activities which have become cliches of the genre - from romantic rides in a gondola, to the opera, to a walk through the beautiful country-side.

I recall an episode of the Wonder Years I saw when I was young, which i've since learned is called "Summer Song". In it, Kevin falls in love with an older woman on vacation, but their relationship is cut short when she must leave prematurely. My young mind, a newly christened romantic, would lead me to fall in love with a new woman on every family vacation.

"Brief Encounter" follows a similar journey, and although it's a bit of a shameless cliched melodrama, the subject matter of the ideal relationship cut short by responsibilities is never less than powerful when done right. It's both an illustration of the struggle for freedom in a repressive society, a criticism of the "stability" of unfulfilling marriages, and a reality check for romantic dreamers. It's a tragedy, but the sureness of the performances by Howard and Johnson, as well as the exquisite imagery, will certainly bring a smile to your face.

I find that I have to keep reminding myself that movies, like books and stage plays, are a form of escapism. They allow us to live other lives vicariously through characters that are usually fictional and always physically detached from ourselves. You see, the thing is this, I ...( read more)am disturbed by infidelity. Not that I'm naive enough to deny its prevalence, I just despise the mass presentation of it as acceptable and often inevitable. I'm also fully aware that watching a film about such matters (i.e. Casablanca, The Apartment, The Graduate, etc.) isn't going to make adulterers out of us any more than Goodfellas is going to make us gangsters or About Schmidt is going to make us hot-tub at the Kathy Bates estate. Still, no matter how much I rationalize it all, affairs, fictional or otherwise, bother me.

Why, you ask, am I telling you all this? Only to justify giving this marvelous film four stars instead of the five that it deserves. The missing star is an issue with me, not with David Lean's Brief Encounter.

Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson elicit candor and passion without the need of words, and yet Noel Coward's screenplay is very rich and arouses a huge deal of emotion. All that in the master hand of David Lean signifies a tender and intense romance, a battle inside a woman's heart...( read more), captured with the utmost capacity by all those genius and sensitive minds involved in it.

    BRIEF ENCOUNTER (1945)
    dir. David Lean
cast. Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway

There is a beautiful scene early on featuring Celia Johnson's character walking out of the train station, she crosses the path of an acquaintance who says hi, but she doesnt hear

...( read more)it, as she is stuck in her head, thinking about the man she spent a special moment with. Its the beginning of what would become of a love affair between a married woman and a married man who met, simply, in a train station.

Unlike many movies about cheating husbands or wives, Brief Encounter doesnt feature a bad guy. Their affair is not about sex or betrayal, its about love and the story is very engrossing.

The narration is what makes this film special. Without it, the film would be quite bland in some way. Its with that narration we understand the depth and the importance of that relationship, its with that narration we understand how tearing it is for that woman to cheat on her husband, but also to cheat herself, for not allowing herself to love that man she briefly encountered.

The acting is solid, especially Celia Johnson. But why, oh why, does everyone have to speak so fast ? At 82 minutes, Brief Encounter is probably a 100-minute film if the dialogue wasnt delivered so quickly. But that would be my only small problem with the film. David Lean works the camera perfectly and some shots are filled with meaning. I picked Brief Encounter randomly, and Im glad I did. Very influential for the genre.

A very English B&W romance as Celia Johnson's stiff upper lip goes all quivery on meeting handsome doctor Trevor Howard, although its going to end in tears one way or another as both parties have perfectly-acceptable-if-a-little-lacking-in-the-fizz-department marriages back at h...( read more)ome. Contains the most romantic soundtrack in the world ever in Rachmaninoff 's second piano concerto and some magnificent shots of steam trains for those hard-hearted souls who prefer such things to love.

Lean's double-headed waltz accomplishes something unbearably beautiful: to challenge the majority of its audience by linking Laura's monologue to the narrow train station of the couple's farewell meetings in a most naturalistic manner,it's as if Johnson and Howard are actual char...( read more)acters, flesh and blood.
