GoodFellas (1990,  R)
GoodFellas
I believe that "Goodfellas" is the greatest gangster movie of all time. The very first time I saw "Goodfellas" I didn't quite know what to make of it. The beginning of the film grabs your attention with the abrupt violence and then never lets go. By the half way point of the movie I knew that I loved it and that it was quite possibly one of the greatest movies I had ever seen. The characters in the film are hardly one dimensional, they are ever changing just like people are in the reality of life. Perhaps the one thing that "Goodfellas" has above any other gangster movie including "The Godfather" is that everything that happens in the film is real, it actually happened. Now to call the film objective would be a mistake but what happens in it is Henry Hill's interpretation of what really happened to him in his life. Also after reading the book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi I realized that this isn't just the greatest gangster film, or one of the greatest films ever, it is also one of the greatest book adaptations to film. The film is true to the content, structure, story, and even the spirit of the book. This film is perfect all the way through and through, from it's flawless direction, spot on acting performances, amazingly accurate settings, to the immaculately delivered dialogue, this movie is my perfect movie.

The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed
From the first time I saw "The Departed" in the theater I loved it and my fondness for it as a film has only grown since then. It is one part Good Cop versus Bad Cop movie and two parts Gangster movie. From the opening monologue by Jack Nicholson this movie had my attention and it never let go from there. The comparitive views of the two central characters lives is truly the glue that holds this masterpiece together as the bad cop is working his way up the chain of command the good cop is on the streets fighting his way through life as an undercover cop in the Irish mob. The performances in this
movie by Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon were above andbeyond what I expected. Jack Nicholson was on a level of his own portraying an aging Irish Mob Boss. The true surprise of this film was the performance by Mark
Wahlberg, utterly astounding how well he delivered the dialogue. Scorsese's Direction is masterful as he paints a picture that is so well done that you can watch it multiple times and still enjoy it. This film definitely deserved the Oscars that it won it was just a shame that Scorsese didn't get one sooner.

Cidade de Deus, (City of God)
Even though I sometimes find myself at odds with his opinions of certain kinds of movies, I believe Roger Ebert put it best when he said that this is "one of the best movies you will ever see". As you watch this film you realize that Ebert is right, this is one of the best movies ever made. The story, setting, and content of this movie are so well put together that I won't even put the film through the indignity of trying to explain it. I will simply say this: watch this film it will change your perspective on a few things.

A History of Violence (2005,  R)
A History of Violence
When I first saw this movie in the theater I was blown away. I went in thinking that it would be interesting to see what Cronenberg's take on the gangster film would be and I left realizing that he had just completely redefined the gangster film genre. This film focuses more on the interpersonal relationships of the characters than on the crimes and gangster elements. Cronenberg weaves a delicate yet balanced picture, that is provocative, shocking, and amazing all at the same time. The speed and realism of the violence was also completely impressive. The end of this film left me speechless,

Reservoir Dogs (1992,  R)
12
Seven (Se7en) (1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
The film "Seven" is truly one of the more disturbing movies about a serial killer to come out. This is due to the fact that you never even get to witness any of his crimes, all you need to see is the aftermath of his rampage to truly grasp the depths of his insanity. Another reason that we never get to see any of his crimes is because the killer is in control during the entire duration of this film, you never get to see the crimes because the detectives that you are following never had a chance to stop him. This film is truly a masterpiece of equal parts suspense, terror, and disgust. David Fincher sets himself above the rest of the field with his amazingly artful direction. This is my favorite police versus serial killer film ever because it isn't afraid to show you the harsh realities of both life and death.
13
Casablanca (1943,  Unrated)
Casablanca
This Film is a Classic! You really can't say much aboput this film because it has all already been said. Peter Lorre, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, the cast of this film was dynamite. This film garnered almost every critical acclaim and it deserved all of them. I sometimes watch this film to see what greatness actually looks like on celluloid.
14
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005,  PG-13)
Memoirs of a Geisha
Watching this film is like looking at a wonderful painting, and following every shadow and line. I found this movie to be a huge bummer up until the last five minutes where you learn the truth of the story and you realize that she accomplished what she always wanted. The cinematography alone warrants a good rating, but to be honest I actually liked this movie it was rather enjoyable.
15
Gone With the Wind (1939,  G)
Gone With the Wind
What can be said about this movie that hasn't been said a thousand times before? This film is one of the greatest movies ever made, Period. I find the fact that this film and the "Wizard of Oz" are both considered two of the greatest american films ever made and they were both directed by the same guy in the same year. Victor Fleming sure had a lot of talent, that is for sure but his name isn't as well remembered or recognized as Orson Welles, Sad but true. But, I digress, The film "Gone With the Wind" is one film that deserves all of the praise that it gets, this is truly one of the greatest American Films ever. A Grander Historical Masterpiece has yet to be seen.
16
Far and Away (1992,  PG-13)
17
The Big Lebowski (1998,  R)
The Big Lebowski
This is hands down the most quotable movie ever made. This film is an excellent example of subtle yet overwhelming humor. I find some of the more subtle qualities of this film fascinating, like the almost film noir like setting of the middle of the film. This like many other films was under appreciated when it came out. When i saw it in the theater there were barely any people in there aside from me and my companions. Since then this film came out on video and gained a very large and diverse cult following. This is my personal favorite film by the Coen Brothers, it is a movie that I have seen many times and practically know all the dialogue to. I love this film.
18
Rushmore (1998,  R)
Rushmore
My favorite movie of all time. The use of color and the theatrical setting of the film make it an almost magical journey through the angst filled mine field of an adolescent males life. When I first saw this movie I was in the same awkward stage of my life that Max was in during the course of the film. Whenever I watch it I get an almost euphoric sense of nostalgia that makes it an amazing experience for me, every single time I watch it. All that aside... the performances by Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray were among the best in there careers as well. Olivia Williams paints a hauntingly clear portrait of the character of Miss Cross, a woman who is in love with a man long dead. The use of the seasons as the titles for the different acts of the movie. As you watch this film you start to realize that the film itself is like one of Max's productions in the film itself which is what makes this film unique. The colors in this movie are as vibrant as the colors used in a renaissance painting, just beautiful. With all the things that are right with this film, what could be wrong?

A Mighty Wind (2003,  PG-13)
A Mighty Wind
"A Mighty Wind" is another example of a top notch superb Mocumentary. This is Christopher Guest and company at their very best. The characters and the story of this movie are hilarious and at the same time dramatic and captivating. This story plays out in a typical fashion for the brilliant Guest and company, the story unfolds and all of the funny little quirks of the subject come to the forefront of the film. This movie is hilarious and the music in it is amazing. Definitely worth watching if you like either comedies or musicals because this is an excellent example of either or both.
23
Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008,  R)
24
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004,  R)
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
This movie is already a classic in my book. A comedic duo in the vein of Cheech and Chong, this movie was surprising and wonderful. I love this movie, there I said it. It was truly hilarious, it was like a look into an extraordinary day in the life of two everymans. I really enjoy the characters and story of this movie. It got me laughing right at the beginning and I didn't stop laughing until the end. Neil Patrick Harris played himself in one of the funniest performances I have seen. This is just a funny movie that is good to watch when you are in the mood to laugh alot.

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008,  R)
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
I enjoyed this great sequel, I believe that it stayed true to the original in every single way. It even had a few surprises in it that I couldn't have expected, it was just a solidly great follow up to a now classic film. It wasn't as good as the first one but it really didn't have to be because it was hilarious!

Superbad
This film makes me laugh so much. I love this movie, Michael Cera and Jonah Hill's interactions are hilarious. Seth Rogen's writing and acting in this film is impecible, Bill Hader is awesome. The Journey of Evan, Seth, and McLovin are hilarious journeries through the end of their highschool "careers". The quotability factor on this movie is off the charts.
30
Hot Rod (2007,  PG-13)
Hot Rod
This is just a ridiculous movie... But I like it! The end of this movie had me laughing all during the credits. This is just such a hilarious film, if you want to see something that is laugh out loud funny, then watch this. It is a nonsensical journey through the life of a wanna be stunt man who is absolutely awful at it. Mainly this film just helps prove the point that Andy Samburg and Bill Hader are just two more rising stars from within the ranks of the Saturday Night Live cast. Not a movie to be taken seriously but just an entertaining laugh riot.

Fiddler on the Roof (1971,  G)
Fiddler on the Roof
One of the best Musicals ever put to film. Tevye played by Topol is one of the best acting performances I have ever seen in a Musical. Usually actor's focus on Music or the Acting, one or the other, But in this film the acting, singing, and direction are all magnificent. This film won the Oscar for best Cinematography and it is easy to see why when watching this film. The colors are so vibrant that when you are watching the movie it is like walking through an art gallery full of paintings from the Renaissance. This is my favorite classical musical film ever bar none.

Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror) (2007,  R)
Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror)
I loved this movie, it was an amazing throwback of a film. It exuded all of the campy awesome things that made all of the horror films of the mid 70s to early 80s so much fun. I loved this movie through and through, I mean melting body parts and insane military zombies, what is there not to love?

Night of the Living Dead
This is the film that started it all. The original zombie gore movie, without this little gem other zombie movies wouldn't be the way they are today. This movie changed the horror genre for the better and is still a classic to this day. It is also a stark and telling political commentary about the United States in the 60s.

Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys) (1995,  R)
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)
The best time travel movie ever made. Even though this is based upon another movie, upon further study I found this to be the superior of the two films by a lot. This is due to the fact that Terry Gilliam is an artistic genius. The surreal and real parts of this movie are so delicately interwoven that even you as the audience can barely tell them apart. What truly is going on in this movie, is it all a delusion in someones head that you get to watch or was there really a man from the future that failed to prevent the apocalypse. You are the one who has to decide what it is that you take away from this film, which is really what makes it great.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
This is one of the more interesting dramas to come out in a long time due mainly to the fact that the director Michel Gondry is a genius. "Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind" is the rise and fall of a relationship in modern America. The thing that separates this film from the rest of the dramatic pack is the science fiction angle that it takes and the later use of fate and destiny, because even though they erased each other out of their respective lives, they are drawn to each other. A great film for people who love good films.

Blade (1998,  R)
Blade
This movie is an excellent example of a comic book adaptation done right. The awkward yet mildly entertaining "Blade" comic book is nothing like this and to be perfectly honest the movie is much better. This movie took the daywalker concept and ran with it. They fashioned a story far more compatible with the screen than anything that was in the "Blade" comics. This is a perfect action / horror movie, this movie and it's sequels were the epitome of Wesley Snipes' bad assness. Stephen Dorf plays an excellent villain as Deacon Frost. The action scenes in this movie were well choreographed and lined up with the special F/X , this was just a top notch action movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
115
Blade II (Blade 2) (2002,  R)
Blade II (Blade 2)
This is an excellent example of a sequel that is superior in almost every way to the original. This is in large part due to the superior direction, Guillermo Del Toro's work in this film is phenomenal. This movie's creature effects and portrayal of vampire society is at the same time true to the original and superior to it. The artistic vision of this film is far more distinct than the almost cliche vampires of the first "Blade". This film expands the way we as the viewer are forced to look at the vamire characters in the blade universe because this film depicts them as vulnerable and just as suceptible to humanity and emotion as we are. If you are looking for a movie that has action that is next level and scares that are first rate than look no further than this movie, it is the best of both worlds.
116
Blade - Trinity (2004,  R)
Blade - Trinity
This film is in no way as good as the previous two Blade films, but it is an entertaining movie none the less. The action sequences are great just like all of the Blade movies. Wesley Snipes is a bad ass as Blade as usual. The addition of Ryan Reynolds to this film actually helps lighten the mood of this which is very dark. A nice end to an overall excellent action trilogy.

Robert DeNiro is a hilarious comedic actor who has perfect timing and a sharp wit. Team him up with a veteran comedic talent like Billy Crystal and you have yourself a winner. This film is funny as hell, you have DeNiro playing a mobster in a way that we have never seen him done before. He is where a lot of the laughs derive from with Crystal playing a wise cracking straight man. This film is great and is further proof that Harold Ramis is a great director.

Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko is an excellent film. Its simplistic yet effective surrealism make this film a joy for me to watch. This film has gained quite a cult following and is an amazing picture. The director;s cut is quite good as well though I wouldn't say that it was better than the theatrical cut. If you have not yet seen this film then you should at least try to watch it because it is quite good.

28 Days Later
Danny Boyle is a very good director and I believe that he did an excellent job giving the Zombie genre his own little spin. I enjoy this movie alot but find it unfair because of the un-godly unnatural speed of the zombies. Some people say that this coupled with the Rage virus aspect of the film doesn't make it a Zombie movie, to that I call bullshit. When this film had its previews in the Theaters it said "Danny Boyle reinvents Zombie horror". A movie is what it is and if humans are being chased around by seemingly dead people, then its a Zombie movie. This is a Great Zombie movie that revitalized the then lagging horror sub-genre when it first came out.

Director Luc Besson's Science Fiction Masterpiece. This is just a flat out great Sci-Fi / Action flick. The look, feel, and artistic work on this film are just so well done that when I first saw it, it took my breathe away. The cast is amazing, the writing is great, and the film itself is also just entertaining eye candy. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it and always worth a re-watch if you have.
